CWC GALLERY presents: Supermodels – Then and Now

CWC GALLERY is pleased to present the group exhibition »Supermodels – Then and Now«. The self-curated exhibition shows more than 100 works of the best-known artists and a selection of outstanding fashion, portrait and nude photography of the most famous supermodels of the last few decades.

According to Thomas P. Campbell, director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a worldwide successful model needs to be able to inspire the designer and to represent his intention. In this way a model can obtain a special iconic status and her face can become an own brand. In art, the motif of a supermodel has developed into an international scheduled genre which brings up maximum prices in auctions. The CWC GALLERY appreciates this development with the group exhibition »Supermodels – Then and Now« and presents outstanding works of photographic history from the extensive collection of CAMERA WORK AG and partly never seen works of famous photo artists.

For five decades supermodels have been a great part of photographic art. They inspire artists such as muses. With their cooperation they create artwork which is a mirror of their time. Richard Avedon’s works of Twiggy or Veruschka illustrate the revolution of culture of the late 1960s and early 1970s. The same applies to works of Peter Lindbergh and Michel Comte from the late 1980s and early 1990s. On the other hand portraits of Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Iman or Christy Turlington convey a new image of the understanding of supermodels. Until the mid-1990s the public attention towards famous supermodels had increased. They reached a kind of iconic status in the world of fashion. Instead of staging the models as unapproachable and flawless beautiful goddesses in advertising campaigns, artists such as Peter Lindbergh and Irving Penn show their natural beauty. Lindbergh’s intimate portrait of Berri Smithers or Penn’s natural nude of Amber Valetta present the beauty of the women and show the intimacy between the artist and the model. A special focus in the exhibition is on Kate Moss, whose portraits and nudes by Ellen von Unwerth, Paolo Roversi, Patrick Demarchelier or Albert Watson show the mutability of the model. Photo art helped creating Kate Moss as a global brand, whose »heroin chic« turned into a unique trend and influenced a whole era.

The group exhibition »Supermodels – Then and Now« is an exclusive selection of outstanding portraits of photo art of over five decades and a testament to the influence of supermodels on photo art. Among the exhibited works are also the world-famous work »Mathilde on Eiffel Tower« by Peter Lindbergh, in which fashion slides into the background to make room for the personality, as well as the sensual works of Paolo Roversi’s famous »Nudi« series, in which the artist uses his technique »drawing of light« to create a mysterious aura.

Artists in the exhibition
Richard Avedon, Tina Berning & Michelangelo Di Battista, Cecil Beaton, Bruno Bisang, Gavin Bond, Michel Comte, Anton Corbijn, Sante D’Orazio, Brian Duffy, Fernand Fonssagrives, F.C. Gundlach, Pamela Hanson, Marc Hispard, Dominique Issermann, Russell James, Nadav Kander, Steven Klein, Annie Leibovitz, Peter Lindbergh, Roxanne Lowit, Ralph Mecke, Helmut Newton, Margaretha Olschewski, Irving Penn, Jim Rakete, Rankin, Blaise Reutersward, Bettina Rheims, Herb Ritts, Paolo Roversi, Jeanloup Sieff, Ellen von Unwerth, Antoine Verglas, Albert Watson

About CAMERA WORK
CAMERA WORK was founded in 1997 in Berlin, and has since then become one of the worldwide leading galleries for photography. With its historically coined gallery name, the company has always followed the philosophy to represent, next to world famous photographers such as Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton, Irving Penn or Man Ray, young and contemporary artists to manifest the position of photography as an independent genre within visual art and to give room to new positions. CAMERA WORK exclusively represents many prominent contemporary artists in Germany, Europe or around the world such as Nick Brandt, David Drebin, Jean-Baptiste Huynh, Robert Polidori or Martin Schoeller. To give contemporary photography an even bigger significance, CAMERA WORK opened the CWC GALLERY in the beginning of 2012 in Berlin. The CWC GALLERY focuses on contemporary photography exhibitions. CAMERA WORK regularly takes part in the major international photography fairs, such as Paris Photo or Tokyo Photo. In the 2001, founded CAMERA WORK AG owns one of the worldwide most extensive and high quality private photography collections with numerous vintage works of the most famous photographers of the 19th century up to the present. Beyond the emphasis on fashion-, nude and portrait photography, CAMERA WORK also focuses on the genres architecture and still life. The two galleries, CAMERA WORK and CWC GALLERY enable, in collaboration with museums, galleries and other art institutions, to present exhibitions worldwide. The extensive collection of photographs and items of the Kennedy family encouraged the company to open the Museum THE KENNEDYS in 2006 in Berlin, which is the second biggest of its kind in the world.

Launch Schwarzkopf essence ULTĪME & Schwarzkopf blonde ULTĪME

Schwarzkopf essence ULTĪME and Schwarzkopf blonde ULTĪME: two new hair brands exclusively developed with beauty icon Claudia Schiffer

The best kept beauty secret has finally been revealed: Schwarzkopf essence ULTĪME and Schwarzkopf blonde ULTĪME, two new hair cosmetics brands
by Schwarzkopf, exclusively developed with beauty icon Claudia Schiffer.

Schwarzkopf essence ULTĪME offers women a hair care range for strong, shiny, truly precious hair. The high-performance formulae of Schwarzkopf essence ULTĪME contain luxurious pearl essence. Throughout history, the pearl, with its inner glow and shimmering iridescence has been a sought-after jewel and beauty ingredient. In the Schwarzkopf essence ULTĪME formulae they form a part of the precious ULTĪME-4-Complex, a combination of pearl essence, panthenol, refined protein and keratin. Next to the Schwarzkopf essence ULTĪME hair care range, Schwarzkopf blonde ULTĪME offers a choice of high-performance blonde shades.

The brands, Schwarzkopf essence ULTĪME and Schwarzkopf blonde ULTĪME, combine the insider know-how of one of the world’s most famous and successful models with the hair expertise of Schwarzkopf.

“I’ve always wanted to design and create hair cosmetics products”, says Claudia Schiffer, “and Schwarzkopf has given me the opportunity to finally develop my own signature hair line.” Claudia Schiffer has been in the modelling business for more than 25 years and knows exactly what kind of stresses hair is exposed to: it is straightened and curled, backcombed, bleached and coloured. Hair damage is the inevitable result.

Claudia Schiffer’s long, blonde and healthy looking hair has become her trademark and is why so many women consider her a beauty icon. Who wouldn’t want such a beautiful, luminous blonde mane?

“I’m very proud for being able to contribute all my experiences to the development of Schwarzkopf essence ULTĪME and Schwarzkopf blonde ULTĪME”, explains Claudia Schiffer. “I hope every one will love the products we created as much as we do.”

As part of the cooperation, Schwarzkopf and Claudia Schiffer also created a highclass signature fragrance for Schwarzkopf essence ULTĪME. It consists of 135 carefully selected ingredients that harmonise perfectly with the various formulas. The result is a timelessly modern scent with notes of fresh fruit and white blossom, rounded off by a sensual combination of white musk, sandalwood and vanilla.

Schwarzkopf essence ULTĪME

Claudia Schiffer knows the best beauty secrets, and thanks to her long experience in the modelling business she has developed a strong sense of what real quality is. With Schwarzkopf essence ULTĪME, Schwarzkopf is offering women an extra rich, luxurious all-round hair care range. The high-performance formulae contain the precious ULTĪME-4-Complex, a unique combination of pearl essence, panthenol, refined protein and keratin. The extra creamy consistency surrounds each hair and pampers it with nourishing ingredients. Schwarzkopf essence ULTĪME works in all dimensions of the hair structure: it repairs the hair in the cells and restores the natural elasticity. The hair surface is refilled and the protective lipid film is rebuilt – for healthy looking hair with stunning shine. With a choice of 15 expert products the portfolio offers targeted solutions for all hair needs.

The Schwarzkopf essence ULTĪME portfolio:

Four lines – Omega Repair, Diamond Color, Crystal Shine and Biotin+ Volume – use selected hero ingredients to provide ultimate care for the needs of all hair types.

Omega Repair with lavishly rich omega oil rebuilds the structure of damaged, depleted hair and prevents split ends. The line includes Shampoo, Conditioner, BB Beauty Balm and an Intensive Mask.

Diamond Color with Diamond Gloss Serum and UV filter protects coloured hair against fading and provides spectacular colour luminosity. The Shampoo, Conditioner, Shine Boost Spray, Intensive Mask and Illuminating Oil build the perfect range for coloured and highlighted hair.

The Crystal Shine line provides glamorous shine with millionised reflections. A Shampoo, Conditioner and Finishing Oil give dull and normal hair true superstar shine. A heat protecting spray protects the hair from styling heat up to 220° C.

Thanks to the Biotin+ Volume line with biotin-complex fine, flat hair gets great volume and fullness – with feather-light effect. A Shampoo and Conditioner provide everything hair needs to achieve breathtaking volume and root-lifted hair.

Art project to protect elephants

A 35 strong herd of a life-size baby elephant sculpture, made out of resin and decorated in bright colours, have been touring the UK to raise awareness of the plight of the animal.
Graphic designer Richard Powell has painted one of them in a Red Arrows motif. Others have designs on them conjured up by celebrities.
The public art tour is called
Elephant Parade, and Richard’s elephant stands shoulder-to-shoulder with creations by model Claudia Schiffer, TV presenters Alex Jones and Rylan Clark, and boy band
Union J.
People can bid to buy the elephants in an online auction, with bidding open until July 26 at www.intuelephantparade.co.uk/elephants.

The proceeds of the auction will be donated by the tour sponsor, intu Properties plc, to The Asian Elephant Foundation, which was set as a non-profit organisation to support elephant conservation projects across Asia.

Claudia Schiffer’s elephant sculpture is called Forest, and is painted in dark green and black, representing trees.
Rylan Clark has coloured his
elephant grey and called it Sparkey, and Alex Jones’s elephant is covered with red and pink flowers, and stallion imagery.

Claudia Schiffer has been a follower of Elephant Parade for many years. She said: "The Elephant Parade is such a fantastic, worthwhile public art initiative that will bring home the very real threat to the survival of the Asian Elephant".
