Documentaries and Reports – The Era of the Supermodels – Deutsche Welle

In January 1990, the British fashion magazine “Vogue” featured a cover story bringing photographer Peter Lindbergh together with top models Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista and Tatiana Patitz. This heralded a whole new era: the supermodel phenomenon was born and with it a new type of woman. Lindbergh photographed his models without status symbols: no jewelry, no elaborate hairstyles and no outrageously expensive clothes. The supermodels came to epitomize the zeitgeist of the early 1990s, and launched an intense and short-lived golden age in modeling. Claudia Schiffer, Nadja Auermann and Kate Moss soon joined their ranks. The powerful “Elite” modeling agency had them all under contract and pushed prices to unprecedented heights.
