Claudia Schiffer stars in documentary about her career

The supermodel grants documentary-makers access to archive footage for a retrospective on her career

An editor, designer or model is hardly worth their weight in matching Louis Vuitton luggage these days unless they have starred in a September Issue-style fash-umentary.

Claudia Schiffer is the latest fashion figure to agree to unprecedented access for an online documentary, giving a peek at life behind the clothes and red carpets.

"One of Patrick Demarchelier's goals was always: 'Can I get one of the girls to take their clothes off?'" says Schiffer, sitting curled in an armchair in 'Claudia Schiffer La Dolce Vita'.

The fact that a photographer tried to persuade a model to remove some clothing is hardly breaking news, but Schiffer?s confidence to say no as a young model alone in Paris suggests the kind of steeliness that has taken her to the top of the fashion pile and kept her there.

Schiffer appears in the film made for website Fashionair, which was granted access to archive Chanel footage and stills for the film. Charting Schiffer's rise from being spotted in a nightclub aged 17 to meeting Karl Lagerfeld, the film won?t rock the fashion world ("I was in such awe of him," the model says at one point), but it lends insight into one of the world?s first supermodels.

Schiffer reveals the moment she worked out that if she moved to Paris, if she sacrificed her social life and, crucially, if she resisted Demarchelier?s attempts to persuade her to pose nude for pictures until she was established, she could make a career out of modelling.

We see vintage footage of a vital young Schiffer dancing down the catwalk for Chanel ("I remember saying What do I do? and Karl Lagerfeld said: Just be yourself, just walk however you want to walk, it doesn?t matter.") - a comforting reminder that runways were not always such sober, emaciated affairs. We also see the Vogue cover star posing for Guess jeans, then - without her hair and make-up done - looking very young, ringing home from Paris to talk to her parents.
